Why Dog Clothes Are More Than Funny Costumes

Since celebrities and socialites started the trend of dressing their dogs in outfits that resemble human clothes, t-shirts, hoodies, parkas and shoes have sprung up in a great number of pet shops and boutiques. Yet, many people still think that this is just a whim of fashion. Actually, dog clothes can bring about a lot of benefits for both you and your dog. 

 Many dogs don’t have an adequate fur coating to face the upcoming cold months. This is due to the different adaptations that predominate among dog breeds, which cause tropical and warm climate breeds like Chihuahuas to have a hard time developing thick fur for the winter. Another cause of this “thin-fur syndrome” is the degree of domestication in which our dogs live. Nowadays, it’s extremely rare to find a family that doesn’t allow the dog to at least sleep inside. Because of this, modern-day dogs aren’t used to the wind, rain and cold temperatures that many wild animals have to endure, so they don’t develop enough climate protection adaptations, such as fur.  

All of this means that dog clothes such as coats and sweaters can be a necessary item for man’s best friends, just as we need jackets to survive the winter. Many dogs simply don’t have fur that’s thick enough for them to spend time outdoors comfortably. Dog clothes now come in many different fabrics, and some of them are waterproof, which makes them a perfect solution for a blustery day. If you’re still under the impression that this is all an exaggeration, just remember that horses regularly wear coats at night time and during winter!

Dog clothes can also work as a barrier between your pet’s skin and the environment’s allergens, which can really help to reduce its symptoms and ailments.
